In any kind of show or event in the theater, the rules are quite straightforward – arrive on time, sit in your designated place and enjoy it without talking or singing very loudly, if at all.
Sydney residents are calling a case of poor behavior that they think is becoming more common. But, it seems that it may not be new enthusiasm after all, as an attitude is being exposed to the same thing.
“Put your phones away !!!!”
A Sydney Reddit user has received on the platform after noticing some embarrassing behaviors in the opera home.
The poster said they were there to see the orchestra, but soon it became clear that not everyone was on the same page.
“For anyone who will see a theater/orchestra/opera performance in Sydney, place your phones away !!!!” They said.
“It was in the opera house last night and both foreigners on both sides me crossed half of the show moving through social media. Ever.”
The poster then asked why this behavior is becoming more common, as less and less theater is comparing to the rules of courtesy.
“Has anyone else noticed for this to be normalized lately?” They asked.
“They came offened when I asked them to remove it. Do some theater tags and save the phone for half the time!”
Who is to blame?
The commentators in the post were quick to point the finger in all kinds of people, such as the elderly, the crosses and the shameful plus.
“Especially in the symphony, I have noticed that there seem to be people coming to a cruise ship and they want to see the opera house, so they just buy a ticket for everything that is on that night. They usually disappear after the interval,” said one person.
“This happened to me in the theater. An elderly couple used their phones throughout the first half. After the interval, I told them,” Phones away now “as they were children. Care,” another.
“The worst I have ever encountered in the opera house was a block in front of me looking at the whole concert. The whole family there to enjoy some music, and Dad just had to take a look at some Mid Trasa sex games …” said one third.
“You know the door is there, you don’t have to stay here!”
But a recent interview with Hamilton Anthony Ramos star proved that anyone can be.
The 33-year-old appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, answering some complicated questions, including some of the high-profile audience members in the increasingly popular Broadway show.
“Who was the most terrifying celebrity to see in the audience during your Hamilton days?” Asked Cohen.
And his answer was just as shocking.
“The most terrifying was Madonna with her iPad on her face,” he said.
“I was like ‘damn, shorty, if you’re not enjoying so much, you know the right door there, you don’t have to stay here!”
While he did not elaborate, the answer refers to an incident that happened again in 2015, when Playbill reported that Madonna was not invited to the backstage in Hamilton for the lack of theater labels.
In a tweet now deleted, the creator of the Lin-Manuel Miranda show said the night was the ‘first time [he] Asked phase management not to allow a famous man (who was writing throughout the act 2) in the background. ‘
Sources told the playbill that she appeared late for the show at the Public Theater and was using her phone throughout the show.
Star Jonathan Groff confirmed the story shortly after an interview with Dot429, saying she was allowed in the background “because she was on her phone.”
“You can’t miss it from the scene,” Groff said.
“It was a black audience void in front of us and her face there perfectly lit by the light of her iPhone through three-quarters of the show.”
So in the future, you may want to remove it – you never know what you can lose.
