Apollo, the Greek God of Arc and the son of Zeus, was a prominent deity in ancient Greek and Roman mythology.

Sanctuary of Apollo was first discovered by German archaeologist Max Ohnefalsch-Richter in 1885, and “was considered one of the most spectacular findings of his time.”

However, after his “inadequate” excavations, Ohnefalsch-Richter rebuilt the site, making its exact location forgotten for more than a century.

In 2021, the new team of German archaeologists rediscovered the long -lost temple in the remote Frungriss valley, near the ancient city of Tamassos.

After conducting a wider examination of the site, they discovered treasures that were initially overlooked, including fragments of colossal statues, parts of which seemed to be legs.

“Apparently in 1885 [the votive statues] They were not recognized as artifacts in a hurry, ”the new statement from the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus stated.

Thus, the new one finds “essentially expand our knowledge of – this holy place”.

“” Statue at the Cyprus Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto can end up with fragments found newly found and thus return to their original appearance, “the state continued.

“New types of statues that were previously unknown by Frugissa have also been documented. The discovery of clear legs greater than life, for example, means that the existence of colossal male limestone figures from archaic times can now be proven.”

“Such figures with the greatest life were previously known only here in Fantissa made by Terracotta, including the famous ‘Colossus of Tamassos’ in the Cyprus Museum exhibition.”

Meanwhile, the discovery of two inscriptions in the foundations of the figures belongs to them in the 6th and 7th centuries BC.

“The discovery of two bases with inscriptions is spectacular,” the state is read. “One is inscribed with some local Cyro-Sylllabi characters, while the other refers to the Greek letters Ptolemies, the Hellenistic rulers of Egypt who also controlled Cyprus at the time.”
