GLP-1 drugs like Ozepic and Wegovy can help you dip your baby, but they can also affect your ability to make a truth.
Ayla Barmmer, a registered dietitian and reproductive expert of health, told the post that about 15% of her patients who use medicines have struggled to conceive.
Within this group, she said approximately 40% reported problems such as irregular periods, delayed ovulation and even declining sperm quality associated with their rapid weight loss.
But at a startling turn, some women have experienced the opposite effect on their fertility, giving the so -called “Ozempic baby”.
Barmmer explained what stands behind these opposite results and shared her main recommendations for anyone who receives a GLP-1 who is thinking of starting a family.
As GLP-1 can be destroying your fertility
GLP-1 drug helps people reduce by inhibiting their appetite-but that can lead to serious nutrient deficiencies if you are not careful.
“Clinical dieticians and endocrinologists have already documented protein deficiencies, vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, calcium and folate among GLP -1 users, especially as weight loss exceeds 10% of the initial base,” Barmmer said.
Those missing nutrients are the main players in the development of eggs and sperm, hormone production and embryo health.
To make things worse, suudden loss of weight or sub-withouting causes the brain alarm system. As a result, the hypothalamus pumps the brakes into the production of reproductive hormones to save energy.
“Women tend to experience cycle changes first, while men most often occur with testosterone decline, lower sperm volume, and reduced mobility after significant weight loss,” Barmmer said.
For women, this can also cause luxury loss, where uterine lining does not thicken enough to support pregnancy.
As GLP-1 can overload fertility
But it’s not all the bad news about making the baby.
GLP-1 have aroused a flood of social media posts by women surprised to find themselves pregnant just months after they started drugs, including those who once said they could not conceive.
Barmmer said the increase in fertility is likely to come from the ability of medicines to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce systemic inflammation.
Take polycist ovary syndrome (PCOS), a leading cause of infertility in women who often leads to irregular or lost periods.
“For those with PCOS, which is endocrine disorder no.
Barmmer also noted that GLP-1 receptors are found in the lining of the uterus, ovaries and tests-where they can fight inflammation and the creation of fibrous tissue that damage fertility.
This can help the ovarian glands bloom and implant embryos. It can even strengthen the quality of the sperm, improving concentration and mobility.
“There is this delicate line where there are benefits for fertility as long as the nutritional needs are met,” Barmmer said.
Trying to conceive? Here’s what you need to know
If you are in a GLP-1 and hope to raise your family one day, you probably do not need to leave the drugs cold.
“Most of the risk is attributed not to pay close attention to meeting the needs of nutrients during weight loss, which can be softened,” Barmmer said.
Some of her patients have continued to use the medication while her team adjusts their diet and monitors the level of nutrients through regular lab work. Others have chosen to reduce eight to 10 weeks before trying to conceive, giving drug time to clean their system.
“The worst scenario is to start connecting with the most impoverished concept in the main nutrients that affect the conception, the health of pregnancy and even the long -term health of the baby,” Barmmer warned.
“This applies to both women and men because the status of food predetermination of men has a profound impact on the risk of pregnancy complications,” she added.
To support fertility during a GLP-1, Barmmer recommends consuming at least 1.4 grams of protein per kilo of your target body weight daily.
You should also include a healthy fat source at each meal and keep your calories over 30 kilocalities per kilo to prevent your reproductive system from slowing down.
Barmmer encourages her patients to focus on foods rich in protein, iron, choline, omega -3 fatty acids, zinc, selenium and antioxidants. It recommends getting the lab work every three months to ensure that nutritional needs are being met.
“This is a life time to work with a registered dietitian, especially the one who is also a fertility expert,” she said.
And no, standard prenatal vitamins are not enough on their own. While it was useful, Barmmer said they do not give additional protein, omega -3 fats or calories needed for the development of reproductive cells and early embryo growth.
They also cannot regulate the usual gastrointestinal side effects associated with GLP-1 nausea, early saturation or misuse-which can limit the intake of nutrients.
Still, “a highly nutritious, comprehensive and fully tested multivitamin and additional omega-3 fatty is absolutely indispensable,” Barmmer said.
If the pregnancy is on your list immediately to do, it recommends stopping GLP-1 at least eight weeks before trying to conceive to allow your ovulation or sperm quality to return to normal.
If your period is lost or your food is out of the trail, it may last longer.
Bottom Line: You do not need to share with your weight loss medicines to start a family-But you need a game plan.
“When GLP -1 therapy is combined with deliberate eating, nutrients, proper additional protocol and careful monitoring,” said Barmmer, “many clients move from ‘weight management’ to ‘family building mode’ with healthy, predictable cycles and strong sperm quality.
“Theellic is giving the body both biochemical signals and raw materials it needs to support optimal reproductive health,” she added.
