Yoko Ono has a new neighbor in Dakota.
An apartment directly near the artist’s long house and peace activist – and the former residence of the late John Lennon – has sold for $ 6.2 million, the post learned.
According to Streeteey Records, a four-bedroom co-op, 2.5 bathroom hit the market in June 2024 and sold for its required price, marking a rare transaction inside the famous narrow tight building in West Side at 1 W. 72 Street.
“The apartment is a work of art and received numerous offers,” Daniela Kunen told Douglas Elliman, who held the list.
The seventh floor settlement belonged to the late Paul H. Epstein, a prominent copyright lawyer whose list of clients once included cultural illuminating Leonard Bernstein and Rodgers & Hammerstein-wonderful figures in 20th century American music. The late Bernstein was also a resident of Dakota.
Epstein bought the unit in 2012 with his husband, Garry part and lived there until his death in 2022 at the age of 81.
The new buyer has not yet been identified.
The design of the house reflects the grandeur of the building’s signature, with 13 -legged ceilings, ornate Waincing, five fires and an official gallery that unfolds in eight pleasant rooms.
A currently staged library as a dining room contains a sober damp bar, and footage of the inner courtyard windows of the Dakota interior and the upper West roofs.
Despite her age – the building was completed in 1884 by architect Henry J. Hardenbergh of the Plaza -Dakota hotel fame remains one of the most exclusive and busy cultural addresses of the city.
Ono first moved to the building in 1966 and remained there after Lennon’s assassination in 1980 outside its main entrance. While she now spends most of her time on a 600-hectare farm in Franklin, NY, its presence and heritage remain integral for the mysticism of CO-OP.
At one point, she and Lennon occupied about five units in the building, using the space to live, storage, guards and studios of Ono.
This sale is only second in Dakota this year, after the sale of the Spacht Tool Late Tool’s house in February for $ 8.1 million. Specht was a pioneer for women in advertising after writing a successful television advertisement for the hair color of L’OrĂ©al in 1973. She passed away in May 2024 at the age of 81 from endometrial cancer complications, according to the New York Times.
Meanwhile, only one unit in the building is current in the market-a five-bedroom settlement, eight baths listed for $ 17.5 million. Initially ranked $ 19 million in 2024.
Although it lacks modern equipment such as gyms or salons, which today’s buyers have searched for years, Dakota offers something that others can: part of living history.
Dakota “does not need to appeal to everyone”, Scott Cardinal Architectural previously told the post. “All you need is 100 people who think it’s great. I don’t think there will ever be trouble finding people.”
