A man of Oregon who left his job at a tire company and liquidated his pension savings to navigate to Hawaii with his cat, Photoenix, reached his destination on Saturday, welcomed them by cheering fans at the end of a weekly trip, which he documented for his mass of followers on social media.
Oliver Widger, who was also greeted by Hava Governor Josh Green at the Waikiki yacht club in Oahu, admitted he was nervous in the face of the crowd, which included reporters.
Widger said he was feeling “really weird” – not the season, but, “I just feel like it is like, like, to keep things not to fall.”
He became an online sensation with his story, which followed a diagnosis four years ago with a syndrome that maintained a risk of paralysis and made him realize he did not like his managerial work.
He quit his work with “no money, no plan” and $ 10,000 debt – and the purpose of buying a sailing boat and navigating the world.
He learned himself to navigate mainly on your YouTube and moved from Portland to Oregon’s coast.
He spent months refining the $ 50,000 boat he bought.
He sailed to Hawaii with Phoenix at the end of April, documenting their experiences for more than 1 million his followers in Tiktok and 1.7 million followers on Instagram.
He said he thinks his story, which made national news, resonated with people.
“I think a lot of people are. You know. You’re grinding in your work all day and no matter how much money you make at this point, everyone just try to do enough to get and that you just wear you,” he said. “Just just the world in a strange place, and I think people have seen that it is possible to explode.”
Green introduced Widger with an advertisement.
Fans attacked Widger after the press conference, many keeping cameras and looking selfie.
The most frightening point of travel came when a wheel failed, Widger said. Highlights including the viewing of dolphins and whales and periods of peaceful water.
“Being in the middle of the ocean when it was completely glass in every direction was an absurd feeling,” he said.
Widger, 29, said he never felt felt alone, as he was communicating with friends with tools including video conference.
But he also mourned by not experiencing open waters in a way that other sailors – who had no access to tools like Starlink Internet satellites – have years ago.
He said he could travel to French Polynesia.
But he said he was focused on reaching Hawaii and not what he would do after that. He said he should also make repairs in his boat.
