Exclusive | Long NYC show still owes the theater millions

The long, comprehensive theatrical theater spectacle “Sleep No More” may have taken its latest arch at the McKittrick Hotel in Chelsea in January-but the drama is not over.

Known for its fascinating adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth’s Noir style, the show had been a fixation on the city theater scene since 2011.

While it was scheduled to close in 2024, the popular question kept production about a next year.

And while the curtain has finally fallen, manufacturers Arthur Carpati and Jonathan Hochwald apparently owe millions of scene.

A New York judge ruled last week that the pair are responsible for nearly $ 5 million in unpaid rent and legal fees – sidewalk with the show owner, Centaur Property.

The decision follows more than a year of increasingly bitter legal confusion between the two sides, culminating in four separate lawsuits and a confrontation of the courtroom.

“This was not a case of expulsion because they left about a month of act-voluntary action left without tendering the rent,” he told the post, lawyer and co-founding partner at Oved & Ove LLP, who represented Centaur for The Post.

“We didn’t ask for expulsion. It wasn’t necessary. They left already. We are simply following them for approximately $ 5 million owed.”

According to court files, the Centaur property apparently forgave more than $ 5 million rental during the Covid-19 pandemic in an attempt to give the show the financial respiratory.

But after summarized and reported theatrical experiences became lucrative again, Centaur claims that production once again predetermined in 2023, collecting an additional $ 4.5 million rented before closing the show for good.

The legal battle began in February 2024 – when Centaur sued Karpati and Hochwald as a personal rental guarantor.

In response, the duo opposed Centaur and some of its representatives, claiming that they were forced to deceive the lease change that had previously deleted the clear list.

The tenant’s appeal claimed a series of wrongdoing – but the court rejected these claims.

“This dispute is not about the principle, but to the director,” the brothers terrain and Darren Oved said in an early state.

“PDNYC’s [who the show’s producers operate under] The complaint is an unfounded, wrong and transparent impact to avoid its obligation to pay over $ 4 million in the past second. “

In its ruling, issued on Friday, May 16, the court rejected all the counterclaims brought by Karpati and Hochwald and found them jointly for the amounts owed under rent, including Atttorney’s fees.

“We are grateful for the quick break of the court and the cessation of the sound of unfounded claims against our clients,” Atttorneys said in a state after the decision.

“Harlan Berger and Centaur have acted with maximum integrity throughout this drama.” Sleep No more “will find neither sleep nor nod until his considerable financial obligations to our client are fulfilled.”

According to Oved, the decision to rest the premises was a strategic, it was probably taken to limit further damage.

“They began to realize that it was closing more on them,” he said. “And we told them that the longer they stay there, the longer our damage will accumulate. So they left in a desperate attack to try to close their damage.”

The manufacturers of the show refused to comment.
